small_6196059983Excessive dust can be a very annoying problem for St. Louis area homeowners. Not only does it look bad when it accumulates on your home’s furniture, but it can also make your indoor environment very uncomfortable for people who suffer from asthma and allergies. Luckily, there are many ways you can reduce the amount of dust in your home. We’ve listed some of our favorite methods below!

How to use your HVAC system to help reduce dust in your home

  • Keep your filter clean. The air filter in your furnace will capture a portion of the dust particles in your air, but it can’t do its job if it’s covered in dirt. By keeping your air filter clean, you can ensure that it will remove as much dust from your home’s air as possible.
  • Install a higher efficiency filter. The higher the MERV rating of your air filter, the more dust particles it will be able to remove from your home’s air. For maximum dust removal, consider installing a whole house air cleaner.
  • Address dust problems in your attic. Many dust problems originate in your attic. If you have air leaks leading from your attic into the living spaces in your home, a significant amount of dust can travel through those openings. With the help of a skilled contractor like Jerry Kelly, you can find and seal all the problematic air leaks from your attic.
  • Run your furnace’s fan after cleaning. After dusting or performing other household cleaning tasks that can kick dust into your home’s air, run your furnace fan for 10-15 minutes to allow your home’s air to cycle through your filtration system.

Other tips for reducing dust in your home

  • Instead of dusting, try using a mop and a damp cloth to remove dust from around your home
  • Regularly wash your bedding to get rid of dust that accumulates from skin flakes and fabric fibers
  • Take your indoor rugs outside and beat them to shake off the dust that settles on them
  • Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter that is able to effectively contain the dust that it sucks up
